Family and Consumer Sciences
Contact: Paula Spears
Paula Spears conducts the Lewis County Family and Consumer Sciences program. Through agressive programming efforts she encourages the development of families and individuals and fosters their interaction with the environment. Knowledge is generated through programs and research in Family and Consumer Sciences. FCS programs are presented through workshops, newsletters, publications, exhibits and displays, videos and computer programs.
The Family and Consumer Sciences program is an education program that assists families in Lewis County in the following areas.
Financial Management works with families, educators and agencies to improve budgeting skills, goal setting and management skills.
Family Life helps child care providers and parents in child development, parent/child interaction, guidance and safety. Videos are available through "First Steps" a training series for new child care teachers. Classes are offered to parents who are divorcing through the "Parenting Apart: Effective Co-Parenting" series.
Food Nutrition and Health classes and workshops present information helping participants learn how to make good choices to improve the nutritional quality of the meals they serve their families, teaching skills in food production, preparation, storage and safety and helping individuals learn to better manage their food budgets.
Tennessee Nutrition and Consumer Education Program (TNCEP) educates foodstamp eligible individuals and families for improved self-sufficiency in terms of resource management, dietary qualaity, food safety and food security.
The grant funded program offers presentations for groups of all ages. For the 2003-2004 program year the primary emphasis is on "Eating 5 A Day" targeting towards young children and senior citizens, diabetic education classes and cooking schools for the adult population and basic nutrition programs offered through the Commodity Distribution Program, Adult Basic Education classes and Senior Citizens groups.
FCE Clubsin Lewis County share these goals:

Ever wonder if the things you read are true? FCE provides research base information through The University of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service. Experience learning with friends as you share what you know at hands-on workshops and monthly meetings. Programs are provided in all family and consumer sciences areas, i.e. family economics, family life, environmental education, safety, nutrition, health, housing, aging, and stress management.

Leadership development is a focus for FCE. Through shared opportunities you can learn skills helpful in bringing growth to your community, church, local government, and family. FCE offers learning opportunities as offers and program leaders on the local club level and the county level.

Each year FCE provides the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of families in your community. Community service is the cornerstone for FCE Clubs Projects vary from club to club as they work to meet the needs of the local community.
